It was a busy end to the term for the BSG Equestrian Team.

Saturday 19th March: County Dressage Qualifier @ Kings Sedgemoor

A team of 4 riders Millie Bullock, Frances Wadham, Gemma Lewis and Lizzie Payne competed in the Prelim team class at KSEC. They all rode really well and looked very smart! The team came 3rd in Somerset (and 5th overall) and should be congratulated for all their hard work with their horses.

Lizzie then competed in the Novice class and rode amazingly to be placed 1st and 2nd with her 2 horses. They have now qualified for the National Schools County DR & SJ Finals @ Bury Farm in April. Many congratulations to her and her support team at home.

Sunday 20th March: Mini & Novice JwS Qualifiers @ Millfield Prep

A team of 4 riders then competed in the Arena Eventing Qualifier at Millfield Preparatory School. Gemma and Frances were competing again (very dedicated!) and were joined by Mattie Hill and Miranda Sturdy. It was a very technical course and the girls worked very hard on all of their horses. Congratulations should go to Miranda Sturdy on Pancake who rode beautifully for a clear round.

Tuesday 29th March: County SJ Qualifier @ Moreton

During the Easter Holidays we took 2 teams to compete in the Show Jumping Qualifier at Moreton Equestrian Centre. The first 4 to compete in the 80cm class were Frances Wadham, Mattie Hill, Mai Barber and Jess McCarry. Jess and Mai were at their first competitions with their new horses and Mattie’s horse had gone lame so she was riding Mrs Fischer’s horse. We were all a bit nervous, including Mrs Fischer! The girls, however, rode so well and all four of them achieved a double clear – this is just fantastic! We were very excited. We had an anxious wait but then learnt we came 4th overall as a team (just missing out to some speedy little ponies!) Frances also then came 3rd individually which is a brilliant achievement for them all.

We then moved onto the 90cm class – 3 riders remained the same and Lily McCarry stepped into Mai’s place. Unfortunately, as we began walking the technical course, the heavens opened and it did not stop raining - it then turned into a hail storm just before our first rider! The girls persevered though and Frances and Mattie came away with 2 more double clears.

I was so very proud of all the girls competing today and look forward to the future of these partnerships as they get better and better.

Friday 8th April: Cross Country Training at Pontispool Equine Sports Centre

During the Easter Holidays we also decided to meet up for a little cross country training. Frances, Gemma, Lizzie, Nicola, Mattie and Jess made 2 groups of riders throughout the morning session. All of the horses were on good form and enjoyed a relaxed approach to some training over some technical (and rather large) fences. A particular highlight was Lizzie Payne on her pony taking on an Intermediate cross country fence at a maximum height of 1.15m!! We all made fabulous progress and had fun with our horses which was great. I am really looking forward to our next outing on the 24th of April.

We are also thrilled to announce Lizzie has qualified to represent Somerset for Dressage at Novice level on her 2 horses. The competition is on Friday 22nd April in Buckinghamshire – good luck Lizzie!
